08: Rome to Florence, NYE (day) 2014

December 31, 2014 — we wake up in Rome on a bluebird day.
We already hate the Contiki tour we joined, and we’re only eighteen hours in. Travelling just the two of us for two and a half weeks had been easy. Intimate. This might have been a mistake. Within minutes, we already regretted it.
At least we’d only signed up for seven days: Rome > Florence > Pisa > Lucerne > Paris > London. Then we’d have each other back.
We lined up to see the Sistine Chapel and accidentally ended up inside St. Peter’s Basilica. Oops.
So we began opting out. We wandered at our own pace, then used BlaBlaCar (the early European Uber) to get from Rome to Florence in time to check into our next hotel with the group before dinner.
Dinner, which we also chose to take on our own rather than with the group. It was, after all, our first anniversary together.
Some five-and-a-half years later, I’d hear a song that would throw me right back to the final day in Rome… and the sixth line in the first verse that would rock me to my core while relaxing in the bath.
So, what's the past for?
